PERSONALITY
On a surface level, Zack Fair is a man who tends to wear his heart on his sleeve. He's energetic. He's courageous, he's excitable and he's someone that stays true to himself, no matter what the world thinks. Even if "himself" is a precious flower kind of personality that looks for the positives in everything, and someone that can even come across as irritating with his shonen manga protag personality. Zack is a man that goes through a tumultuous character arc throughout his game which well and truly should have broken him, but he's a man who sticks to his ideals and shows a resilience of spirit which follows him through to the end, even when the constructs around him of honour, duty, and even his dreams are shattered when the actions of friends, colleagues, and enemies make it very hard to believe in anything. Zack is what could be called a tragic character, a man which witnesses almost his entire world let him down- and still, he dies with his ideals of being a hero and his personal sense of honour met.

Zack begins Crisis Core naive, idealistic, eager to prove himself (to a fault even), emotional, and very eager to please. His mentor, Angeal Hewley's, nickname of him- "Zack the puppy" is highly fitting. Zack, early-game personality-wise, is the very personification of a puppy. He's always wagging his tail, so to speak. He's open with his emotions utterly (often to his own detriment) and he's friendly, well-meaning, and he's also very loyal. On the flipside, he's impulsive, he's impatient, and he's also highly brash.

While Zack can act strategically, he's an act first and ask later kind of guy, much to his detriment. While it's easy to leave any early-game analysis of Zack at that, it's important to mention that Zack is a trained SOLDIER 2nd Class- and he's also a highly gifted one which is later promoted to 1st- deemed worthy of undergoing a procedure that turns him into a supersoldier. His hack and slash attitude tends to work for him because he's strong, and he has confidence in his strength. His personal goal, and the reason for living for him, to be a hero, is something that can only work with physical strength. This can lead to overconfidence under the right conditions.

Zack is also a very kind person. As shown with his fast friendship with Cloud as well as his relationship with Aerith, friendships and relationships aren't beyond him. He's a country boy. He takes a humble and open approach to most things, and he's not above having friends below his rank or dating a flower girl from the slums. He also flirts. A lot.

He's wonderful, right? Except shit gets wild, and Crisis Core is a game that's directed by Hajime Tabata, so you can damn well bet there's a few downright unfair things that happen to the main character. Circumstances force Zack to change, to grow, and to adapt to a world which he finds to not conform to his ideals at all, and is in fact very murky, and there are subtle changes in his personality which are telling of the fact these Circumstances forced to take down his mentor.

Zack takes his grief and uses it in a positive way, living on as Angeal's legacy, and becoming an integral part of SOLDIER after him. He becomes fixated on upholding Angeal's ideals of honour, placing as much importance on them as his own of being a hero. I believe his concept of being a hero is influenced slightly by Angeal's dream of honour- He's less brash, less impulsive, and he truly becomes worthy of the First Class rank as both the literal sense of the term- an offensive, superhuman force- but also as a mentor himself.

Only more Circumstances happen. And when Sephiroth's insanity, the Nibelheim Incident, the Company's betrayal, his final confrontation with Genesis, Lazard's death, as well as Angeal's actual death well and truly break him, he clings to Angeal's ideals of honour, and they carry him through. Barely. He becomes attached to an idea. Not of revenge, he's not the sort. It's more the idea that he can start again, as something else- and return to someone important while protecting someone else important to him.

By the time he makes his final stand at the outskirts of Midgar, he's weathered. He's wary, and he's paranoid- not to mention tired in both body and soul. But he's not broken. He dies with a single regret; that he never could apologize to Aerith for being MIA for four years, but at peace with the fact he could protect Cloud, uphold his honour, and become a hero. He names Cloud as his living legacy, which I believe is his way of showing acceptance for his death.

As shown in other compilation entries such as Advent Children and the novella Hoshi o Meguru Otome (The Girl Who Travels the Planet), Zack's... gained quite a bit of chill post-death. In The Girl Who Travels the Planet, he confirms simple facts such as his hatred of Shinra and Sephiroth, and even after Aerith rebukes his attempt to flirt with her, is kind enough to tell her to call him if she ever gets lonely.

In Advent Children Extended Edition, he appears to Cloud when he's about to be killed by Sephiroth, and continues to guide and encourage him by reminding him of his SOLDIER honour (even if he didn't make it.) Again, he's presented as supportive, caring, optimistic, and kind.

ABILITIES
As a SOLDIER 1st Class, Zack underwent a Mako showering procedure, as well as cell augmentation to turn him into a supersoldier.
This gives him strength bordering on superhuman, quicker reaction times than people without anything going on with themselves, as well as a slight regeneration property.
HOWEVER. I'd rank him, always, as a considerable step below Sephiroth.
